Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, is a country of unrivaled beauty and diversity. Stunning tropical beaches line the coast, dense rainforest covers the highlands and ancient archeological ruins dot the countryside.
Culture
Sri Lankan people are gentle, caring and unfailingly welcoming to foreigners. Sri Lankans are hard-working and industrious, and proud of their rich and fascinating heritage. The population is divided broadly into two linguistic groups. The Tamil minority is unfortunately still involved in a 20-year conflict with the Sinhalese majority that has had a debilitating effect on the country’s economic development.
Housing and safety
Safety is often a serious concern for many visitors to Sri Lanka. The intermittent civil war over the last two decades or more has kept many visitors away. However, tourism has flourished regardless, particularly in the south where the war has had little influence on daily life. Teachers and international workers in Sri Lanka have a very pleasant lifestyle and working is safe and plenty of support is available to foreigners and aid workers. Housing is cheap although not freely available. Schools or organizations that employ teachers will usually arrange accommodation at least in the initial stages of the contract.
Religion
Sri Lanka is traditionally a Buddhist society although there are large communities of Christian and Muslim. There is universal freedom to worship, and there is no inter-denomination strife. The Buddhist faithful are gentle and tolerant.
Teaching in Sri Lanka
Expect to find motivated and motivated students in your classes in Sri Lanka. The schools and students will appreciate your time, and take time to get to know you. Many students will feel proud to have a foreign teacher and will try to make the most of their time with you. If you are working in an orphanage or NGO school, you will be treated well even if there is little financial remuneration.
Latest!
Teaching or volunteering positions are available at a rural school in Embilipitiya, in the southern region near the beach resort of Hambantota. The school is run by a Buddhist temple and has recently opened an English medium school. Paid positions at the school are available, and volunteer positions at the temple’s orphanage can also be arranged.
